Arch
An arch is a curved structure that is used to span space while supporting a load. They transfer compression downwards and it only transfers into one place. Arches were used especially by the Romans. To stop the force from collapsing the arch, abutments are used at the feet of the arch. There are different kinds of arches such as a fixed arch which is used for short distance, a 2 hinged arch which is for long distances, and the three hinged arch which is used for medium distances. Arches can be circular, or pointed.

Why it is important
Engineers use an Arch more than a beam sometimes because it can support a bigger load than a regular beam can.
